Yes, we moved there for the money. We both had master’s degrees and 5 and 7 years experience, respectively. We first rented a school-owned 4-room asbestos-clad house for $45 a month. Then we bought that house in the picture for $6000. I cried when your dad took me to see it. He said we had to buy it because the wrought-iron trim on the screen doors already had an “M” in the middle! There were houses in a subdivision across Main Street that were selling for $20,000 to $35,000 at the time, but your dad didn’t want to have a mortgage. Our house was two little houses put together — it had two front doors and a bad hump in the kitchen floor. We did some remodeling and made it livable – barely.
But…believe it or not…we moved there from an even uglier place, 5 miles west of Odessa, surrounded by oil field equipment and pump jacks, with the same scrub landscape. And we had a 5-mile commute!
We used to say that Denver City was the center of all the good hunting and fishing in a 3-state area – but the radius of the circle was 500 miles! We had a ski boat, and we pulled it to Lake LBJ in Central Texas and to Lake Texoma in North Texas for water skiing and fishing.
Actually some of my happiest memories are of those years, when we were seeing the country in our pick-up camper and flying to Oklahoma for lunch or to Colorado Springs for Trick-or-Treat with some friends we had met camping! Our fuel for our airplane was 19 cents a gallon from our own 1000-gallon tank. Slightly higher if we had to buy it away from home.
