Day 7 – Visiting Pierre’s Neighbors

Yesterday afternoon we took a hike over the hill from Pierre's to visit Billy Proctor and his museum. Echo (Pierre's Goldendoodle) stopped and growled for a minute and then came back and stood in front of me and against my legs, so we made a bunch of noise and when Echo said we could go, we continued on:

Billy has lived his entire life in the Broughtons, and his museum is filled with things he's found over the years on his travels throughout the Broughton Archipelago. It's a fantastic place, filled with many interesting things:

Lots of old glass:

Billy (by himself) built a typical logger's shack from a single tree, splitting and milling each piece of lumber by hand. It's "decorated" as you might expect:

This is Billy Proctor:

When I asked him if I could take his picture, he said (sweetly) "Christ I guess so. Everyone else does." 🙂

Billy built this driftwood rail along his dock:

Billy built this giant boathouse with wench to bring the boats up:

Next, local artist Yvonne Maximchuk came by boat over to Billy's dock to ferry us over to her studio for a tour.

Yvonne is a painter and a ceramic artist and makes some beautiful things, and it was great to meet her and see her work. I bought a beautiful little ceramic bowl with a melted piece of sea glass in the middle of it.

The dock in progress in front of Yvonne's (Billy built this too):

Yvonne's studio has an incredible view, don't you think?

Yvonne took us back to Pierre's and I took this photo of her as she headed home:

Before dinner last night, we got to hear a talk from another neighbor, Nikki (aka Daisy Crocket – see her website here) about her experiences surviving in the wilderness up here (on purpose). She was great, and her talk was super interesting!

Also, last night was the christening of Pierre's new hot tub. We didn't go in, but we helped with the rum part of the ceremony and took a few photos.

Great view out over the marina from the new hot tub:

Tomorrow we head to Port McNeill!
