I haven’t even had time to keep up with my favorite bloggers (or update *my* blog in, like two months!). You’re right about the “guilt” factor, too. The other downside is that it can be quite limiting in determining where to stay. I feel like, often, I need to pick a place that has all three of (1) 3G reception, (2) campground WiFi and (3) a nearby coffee shop with WiFi that doesn’t close at 2:00, because likely (1) and (2) are going to fail, regardless of what the websites say. Staying at that really beautiful state park in the middle of nowhere is a weekends-only deal. I finally moved my “official” workweek to four days), but now that just means I’m working twelve-hour days Tues-Fri, instead of 10-hour days Mon-Fri!

Mon, 20 Aug 2012 12:39:20 +0000http://www.riveted-blog.com/working-on-the-road#comment-650Amen on all that. One time I set aside 3 hours to go exploring in the middle of the work day, and I ended up getting lost on an exposed ridge 3000 feet up in the Bridger Mountains outside of Bozeman and was frantically looking for a good boulder to hide behind to block the 50 mph winds while taking a conference call. Without the stress of work.. I would have enjoyed exploring the ridge and getting down on my own time table. I remember thinking how ridiculous this was trying to blend work and life to this degree. It sounds good on paper but it’s stressful and you end up doing neither work or play to the best of your abilities.
After that I started keeping hours where I’m either playing or working. I also ended the habit of responding to emails immediately. I literally shut off my Android’s mobile data signal via a widget when I’m out exploring.. which also has side benefit of doubling my battery life. My office was used to getting less than one hour response times and so it took a little getting used to 4 hour or *gasp* next morning response times! If it was urgent you call or text me.. and well.. hopefully I’ll be somewhere with a signal 😉
But quality time on both fronts has improved dramatically.
